For merchants: what does the discount do to your profit?

A discount comes out of your profit, not your price; a 20% discount on a product with a 50% margin eats 40% of the profit per piece. That is why many stores prefer quantity offers and free shipping over an amount, which reward only those who grow their order. Marketing offer ideas.

Frequently asked questions

1

How do I work out the price after a discount?

Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 25% discount on 200 is 200 × 0.75 = 150, saving 50.

2

How do I work out the discount percentage between two prices?

Subtract the new price from the old one, divide the difference by the old price, and multiply by 100. From 250 to 200: (250 − 200) ÷ 250 × 100 = 20%.

3

Do I apply tax before or after the discount?

If your price is before tax, apply the discount first, then add tax to the discounted price, as the calculator does. If your prices include tax, the discount applies to the tax-inclusive price directly.
