What does CPM mean in ads? Cost per thousand impressions, and how it is worked out

The short answer
CPM stands for «cost per thousand impressions»: what you pay Meta, TikTok or Google each time your ad is shown a thousand times, whether anyone taps it or not. It measures how expensive your audience is, not how well your ad works.

How is CPM worked out?
CPM = (spend ÷ impressions) × 1000Example: you spent EGP 300 and your ad was shown 60,000 times. CPM = 300 ÷ 60,000 × 1,000 = EGP 5.
Why does CPM matter to a seller?
Because it tells you whether the problem is the market or your ad: a high CPM with a good CTR means the audience is dear this season (Ramadan and White Friday push it up), while a normal CPM with weak clicks means the ad itself does not pull. Do not compare CPM across countries; every market has its own price.

In the ads manager you see, per campaign, the spend, impressions, clicks and chats, and above all the delivered orders they brought — so you never judge an ad by CPM alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between CPM and CPC?
CPM is what you pay per thousand impressions, CPC what each click costs. CPM can be cheap and CPC dear if the ad is shown a lot and nobody taps it.
Is a high CPM always bad?
No. An audience that really buys may cost more per thousand and still be more profitable than a cheap one that does not. The final measure is cost per delivered order.
Why does CPM rise in Ramadan?
Because advertisers raise their spend in the same season on the same audience, so the auction price for impressions goes up.
