What does SKU mean? Stock-keeping units, and why each size and colour has one

The short answer
SKU stands for «stock-keeping unit»: a code given to every version of a product whose stock differs. One shirt in three sizes and two colours has six versions, each with its code and stock.

How is SKU worked out?
versions = sizes × coloursExample: a shirt in three sizes (M, L, XL) and two colours = 3 × 2 = 6 versions, each with its own stock.
Why does SKU matter to a seller?
Because one stock count for the whole product lies: size L sells out while the product still reads «in stock», and orders arrive for what you do not have. Counting per version closes the sold-out one alone.
