A free WhatsApp bot — what is actually free

Three things get called a free WhatsApp bot and only one of them is free: the plain app, platform free tiers, and unofficial tools that get your number banned. Plus what really is free at Meta itself.

The short answer

Three completely different things get called "a free WhatsApp bot", and only one of them is free — the second is capped, and the third costs you your number.

And the biggest free thing here is one most pages never mention: Meta charges nothing for the first 1,000 replies a month per number in conversations the customer starts. In our measurement that is 71% of them.

1. The WhatsApp Business app — genuinely free

Entirely free with nothing hidden. Its limits are structural rather than commercial: one person on one device, a greeting and an away message and nothing else, and a broadcast that only reaches people who saved your number — usually a small fraction of your list. A list of five thousand may reach only a few hundred.

The free WhatsApp Business app's limits, and who on your list a broadcast really reaches
And when it is enough on its own

If you work alone and get dozens of messages a day, this is the answer and you should pay nobody — not us and not anyone else. The full comparison with it is here, and it has a row we plainly lose: it is free and we are not.

2. And what is free at Meta itself

This is the item that turns most merchants' sums around, and most pages never mention it: every conversation the customer starts is free at Meta for the first 1,000 replies per number each month, and it was uncapped from November 2024 to 30 September 2026. What you pay for is the conversations you start with an approved template, and replies past the 1,000 at the utility rate.

From our own measurement, not a copied table

Across 24,411 real WhatsApp conversations on our platform before 1 October 2026, 71% cost nothing for that reason alone. If most of your work is answering people who message you and you stay under 1,000 replies a month per number, half the bill you were bracing for does not exist. The calculator gives you your own figure.

3. Platform free tiers — capped rather than free

Several platforms here give a capped number of messages a month at no cost, and that is a correct place to start at a small volume. Typically a few dozen messages a month at zero, then a subscription from a few dollars. (As published on their own sites on 4 September 2026.)

And we do not have a free tier for the paid channels. If you are at thirty orders a month and only want them confirmed, somebody else's free tier is the right decision — a more honest answer than talking you into what you do not need. The full comparison of confirmation tools is here.

4. And the "free" tools whose price is your number

These are not cheap — they are dangerous

Tools that run on WhatsApp Web and promise auto-replies and bulk sending at no charge work in a way Meta did not design for business, and it is the route numbers get banned through. When your number goes, it goes with every conversation and every bit of history on it, and none of it comes back.

The difference is practical rather than moral: the official API gives you a permitted route for bulk sending, and a quality rating you watch fall days before a ban. The detail is here.

A free WhatsApp Web tool versus the official API: the difference is practical, not moral

And when free becomes expensive

At three specific limits, and nothing before them:

  1. When more than one person needs to answer on the same number

The app is one device. The moment two people are taking turns on one phone, messages start getting lost and both of them answer the same customer.

  2. When you want a message to reach someone who never saved your number

This is the limit that surprises most people: the app's broadcast only reaches contacts who saved your number, so your real list is far smaller than you think.

  3. When you want something to happen without anyone doing it

An order confirmed before dispatch, a comment answered under a post, an abandoned cart followed up. Neither the app nor a WhatsApp Web tool does any of it.

Frequently asked

1

Is the WhatsApp Business app really free?

Yes, entirely free with no charge at all. Its limits are not in the price but in the shape: one person on one device, a greeting and an away message and nothing more, and a broadcast that only reaches people who saved your number — usually a small fraction of your list. If you work alone and get dozens of messages a day, it is the right answer and you should pay nobody.

2

And what is free at Meta itself?

Every conversation the customer starts — for the first 1,000 replies per number each month; it was uncapped from November 2024 to 30 September 2026, and since 1 October 2026 replies past the 1,000 bill at the utility rate. In our own measurement before that change, 71% of conversations cost nothing for exactly that reason. What you pay Meta for is the conversations you start with an approved template, and replies to people who message you only past the first 1,000 a month.

3

And the free auto-reply tools that run on WhatsApp Web?

These are not free — the price is your number. They work in a way Meta did not design for business, and it is the route numbers get banned through. When the number goes you lose it and every conversation on it, with no way to get them back. The detail is here.

4

And do you have a free tier?

Not for the paid channels. Our plan that includes WhatsApp is forty dollars a month, and you can try it before paying but it is not free. If what you want is order confirmation alone at a small volume, local confirmation tools and platforms give a few dozen messages a month at no cost — a more honest answer than talking you into something you do not need.

5

So when does free become expensive?

At three specific limits: when more than one person needs to answer on the same number, when you want a message to reach somebody who never saved your number, and when you want something to happen without anyone doing it — an order confirmed, a comment answered, a cart followed up. Before those three, paying buys you nothing.
