The short answer

Professional product photos with a phone need more light than camera: shoot near a window in daylight without direct sun, on a white or single-colour background, steady the phone, clean the lens and avoid digital zoom. Shoot each product from the front, side and back, with a close-up of the details and one in use, at the same size and light for every product. A clear real photo sells more than an edited one, because it is what the customer finds when they open the order.

The ten steps

  1. Shoot near a window in daylight

Indirect daylight is the best free lighting. Put the product beside the window, not facing it, and avoid direct sun, which makes harsh shadows.

  2. Turn off the room lights

Mixing window light with a yellow bulb changes the product's colour in the photo. One light source gives true colour.

  3. A white or single-colour background

A sheet of white card curved from the wall onto the table is enough, so no line shows between floor and background.

  4. A reflector on the other side

A white sheet or foam board opposite the window bounces light onto the shaded side and softens the shadows.

  5. Keep the phone steady

A small stand or a stack of books; use the timer so the shot does not shake when you press.

  6. Clean the lens and skip digital zoom

A fingerprint on the lens blurs the photo. Move closer on foot instead of zooming, because digital zoom loses sharpness.

  7. Five angles per product

Front, side, back, a close-up of the material or details, and one in use. The customer asks about what they have not seen, so show everything.

  8. Keep photos consistent across products

Same background, same distance, same light, so the store looks tidy and products are easy to compare.

  9. Show the size

A photo of the product beside something familiar, such as a hand or a phone, prevents the “I thought it was bigger” surprise.

  10. Edit lightly and never change the colour

Crop, brightness and white balance only. The photo must match what reaches the customer.

By product type

Accessories and watchesVery close shots, a dark background for shiny metals, and watch for your own reflection
Food and sweetsFrom above or at an angle, in daylight, while fresh, with a cut piece showing the inside
CosmeticsThe pack with readable text, and the product's colour on skin or white paper

The photo that brings the order back

The top photo-related reasons for returns

A different colour from the light or editing, a size that was not shown, a flaw hidden by the angle, and a photo from another source that does not match the product. Every cash-on-delivery return costs you shipping both ways. How to count returns in your price.

Real photos help in the chat too: when the customer asks “is it original?” or “is the colour like the photo?”, a photo or video from your phone answers faster than any description. Answering customer objections.

Frequently asked questions

1

Do I need a professional camera for product photos?

Not for most stores. Today's phones are enough if you give them good light and keep them steady. The difference the customer sees comes from light, background and angle more than the camera.

2

What is the best background for product photos?

White or one calm colour for the main product photo, because it shows the product alone and stays consistent across products. Use an everyday setting only for the “in use” photo.

3

Should I edit photos with editing apps?

Light edits only: cropping, brightness and white balance. Changing the colour or hiding flaws makes the customer receive something other than what they saw, and they return the order.

4

Can AI write the product description from the photo?

Yes, in ArabyBot Store: pick the photo and press «Write the name and description from the photo», and it writes the name, description, category and search words; you review them and set the price. The clearer the photo, the more accurate the description. A product from its photo with AI.
