The short answer
WhatsApp Cloud API is the official way Meta gives businesses programmatic access to WhatsApp — and Meta itself hosts it. There is no server to install and no version to keep updated.
It gives you what the regular app cannot: several people on one number, permitted bulk messaging through approved templates, and a quality rating you can watch before your number is restricted. The access itself is free — you pay for the conversations you start and for the platform you run it on.

1. What it actually is
The WhatsApp on your phone is an app. The Cloud API is a programmatic door onto the same WhatsApp network: it lets software receive and send messages as a business number, with nobody holding a phone.
The important word is Cloud: the older On-Premise version was installed on a server that somebody had to run, update and monitor. Meta carries the hosted one, so what stands between you and your first message is a signup, not an installation.
2. What you need to start
- A mobile number not active on WhatsApp
Any country. The only condition is that it is not active on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app at the moment you register it.
- A Meta Business Manager account
Free. Verification unlocks higher messaging limits, and you can start and test before it completes.
- Approved templates for anything you start
Meta reviews the template before it sends. A rejected one simply never goes out — so there are no surprises after the fact.
- A platform to run it — or a developer
The API returns data, not a screen. The inbox, the team, the campaigns and the AI all sit above it. ArabyBot ships them.

4. Cost — the part usually stated wrong
Meta bills per conversation, not per message. A conversation stays open for 24 hours and carries unlimited messages at the same price. So the bill does not depend on how many messages you wrote — it depends on how many conversations you started.
Service conversations — the ones the customer starts — have been free with no cap since November 2024. So if most of your work is answering people who wrote to you, the bill is far smaller than expected. We publish a calculator with measured numbers for Egypt.

Is the Cloud API free?
The access itself is free — Meta does not charge for hosting the API. You pay for two things: the conversations you start with a template (Meta), and the platform that gives you an inbox, a team and automation. Service conversations — the ones customers start — have been free with no cap since November 2024.
Do I need a developer to use it?

What is the difference between Cloud API and On-Premise?

Can I use my current number?
You can, and there are two routes. If the number is live on the WhatsApp Business app today, use coexistence: it stays on your phone and works on the API at the same time, you delete nothing, and we ask Meta for a copy of your contacts and chats for the inbox. If the number is new or not used on the app, register it straight on the Cloud API and it works from the platform alone.
