How do I issue gift cards with a balance for my store's customers?

In «Marketing tools» → «Gift cards» you type the value, the code or leave it blank to be generated, an expiry date if you like, and a note on who and why, then «Issue card». The customer types the code in the coupon box and pays with it up to its balance, any remainder stays for a later order, and the balance returns if the order is cancelled.
The steps in the store panel
- Open gift cards
In «Marketing tools» open «Gift cards».
- Fill in the card
«Value», the «Code» or leave it blank to be generated, «Expires on» if you like, and a «Note»: for whom, and why?
- Issue and send it
Press «Issue card», then send the code to the customer; you follow each card's balance in the list.
What you should know
- The balance comes off inside the order's own transaction, so two orders cannot spend the same money, and it returns if the order is cancelled.
- An order paid by card shows «Paid with a gift card».
