Why does the ad bring messages and no orders? Seven reasons and the fix for each

The short answer
Usually for one of seven reasons: the "messages" goal makes Meta look for people who like to ask; replies are slow so the customer leaves; the ad has no price so everyone asks it; the audience is open; the offer attracts the curious; orders are refused at delivery; and the ad does not know who bought. The fix: answer in the first seconds, put the price in the ad, target people who buy, and tell Meta about confirmed and delivered orders so the ad learns from them.

The seven reasons and what to change for each
| Reason | The sign you see | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The goal buys "people who message" | Many cheap messages, mostly "hello" and "how much?" | Report orders to Meta so it optimises for purchases |
| 2. The reply is slow | Chats that end with the customer waiting | An automatic reply in the first seconds, day and night |
| 3. The ad has no price | Everyone asks "how much?" and disappears | The price and offer in the ad and in the first reply |
| 4. The audience is open or wrong | Messages from cities you do not ship to | The provinces you ship to, or a circle around your shop |
| 5. The offer attracts the curious | Many questions about "free" and "gift" | An offer that is clear from the ad and worth buying |
| 6. Orders are refused at delivery | Many orders, few delivered | Confirmation on WhatsApp before shipping |
| 7. The ad does not know who bought | The cost does not improve however long you wait | Send confirmed and delivered orders to Meta |
The cheapest cause to fix: the reply
Every one of these chats was paid for by an ad, and then nobody answered it. An ad that opens a chat at eleven at night that nobody answers until morning buys a question, not a customer. The bot replies in the first seconds with the price, pictures and sizes of the product in the ad, and takes the order or hands to a teammate. WhatsApp ads.
In what order do you fix it?
- The reply first
The cheapest and fastest fix: a reply in the first seconds from your catalogue, before changing anything in the ad.
- The price in the ad
Someone who messages already knowing the price came to buy, not to ask.
- The area you ship to
Do not pay for a message from a city you cannot reach. Local ads.
- Confirm the order before shipping
A message with "confirm" and "cancel" buttons; what is not confirmed does not ship. Reducing cash-on-delivery returns.
- Teach Meta who buys
Send it the confirmed and delivered orders that came from the ad's chats, so it looks for people like those buyers, not like those who ask.
- Judge by the cost per delivered order
For each ad separately, and pause whatever spends without delivered orders, however cheap its messages.
It knows which chat came from which ad, follows its order to delivery or refusal, puts that next to Meta's spend for each ad, and reports confirmed and delivered orders to Meta. So you see the ad that really brings orders, not the one that brings messages. Ads manager · Ads measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Should I switch the ad's goal from "messages" to "sales"?
If you sell inside the chat, do not drop messages; teach Meta who buys instead: report the confirmed and delivered orders that came from the ad's chats, so it optimises for purchases, not messages. Reporting orders to Meta.
How many minutes does a customer wait before leaving?
We publish no general figure because we have not measured one. What we measured: about 27% of Facebook, 47% of Instagram and 29% of WhatsApp conversations on our platform ended with the customer's message unanswered. The ad pays for every one of them.
Is a bot enough to answer people who come from the ad?
It answers in the first seconds from your catalogue and knowledge base, asks qualifying questions, takes the order, and hands to a teammate anyone who wants a human or asks what it does not know. Lead qualification.
Why are messages cheap and orders few?
Because Meta found exactly what you asked for: the cheapest people who message. A very cheap message is a sign of an audience that likes to ask, not of a successful ad. Compare ads by cost per delivered order. Facebook ad cost.
Does this apply to WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram alike?
Yes, the same reasons. The difference is in fees: a click-to-WhatsApp conversation is free for 72 hours, then templates are paid; Messenger and Instagram carry no message fees, but you can rarely start a marketing message after 24 hours. Messenger and Instagram ads.
