A WhatsApp bot that understands voice notes: how it turns voice into text and answers, and where it fails
On this page 5
The short answer
Yes: the voice note is turned into text within seconds, the agent reads it as it reads a typed message, and answers from your files in the sender's dialect — as text, or as voice if you wish. That matters in a market where many customers send voice instead of typing. The honest limit: audio in a noisy place or a rare dialect can be misheard, so the bot says what it understood and asks when unsure.

Why voice is a market question, not a feature
In Egypt and the Gulf a large share of customers send voice instead of typing — because typing on a phone is slower, the question is long, or they are driving. A bot that answers text only leaves them unanswered until an agent is free, and at night nobody is. So the question is not "does it support voice?" but "what does it do when unclear voice arrives?".
What happens in the first seconds
- Turning it into text
The voice note is transcribed to text within seconds, in the dialect as spoken and not translated into MSA: "do you have size 42 in navy?" stays as it is.
- Understanding and lookup
The agent reads the text like any message: it searches your connected store or files for the size and colour and prepares the reply with price and availability.
- The reply — text or voice
Text in the customer's own dialect, or voice if you chose that for voice messages. Text stays the default because a price or address can be copied from it.
- When unsure
It repeats what it understood and asks, or requests typing, or hands to a person with audio and text. It does not guess — a written rule.
Where it fails, plainly
Noise: audio from a street or a kitchen is partly understood, and the bot says so. Very local words: a local product name or a village term may be mistyped; add synonyms to the knowledge base and it learns them. Numbers and sizes spoken fast: "forty-two" may become 24 — so the bot repeats the number in its reply for the customer to confirm before any order is created.
We publish no accuracy percentage because we have not measured one we would stand behind across many dialects and devices. The honest test: send the agent a voice note from the chat button here in your dialect, from a noisy place, and judge.
Where it matters most
| Business | The usual voice note | What the bot does |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics | "I want to book with the doctor tomorrow afternoon" | Offers tomorrow afternoon's slots and holds one |
| Stores | "Is the navy jacket available in large?" | Reads the store and replies with price and availability |
| Restaurants | A full order by voice | Reads the order back as text for confirmation, then records it |
| Real estate | A long description of what they are looking for | Extracts budget, area and rooms and records them |
Frequently asked questions
Does the bot understand dialect in voice as it does in text?
Mostly, yes: Egyptian, Gulf and Levantine are turned into text close to what was said, and the agent reads it as a typed message. Less common dialects and very local words can be misheard, so the bot repeats what it understood when unsure: "I understood you are asking about size 42 — correct?".
Does it reply in voice too?
It can: you choose to always reply in text, or in voice when the customer sends voice. Most businesses choose text because the customer can copy a price or an address from it; voice replies help an audience that does not read easily.
Does the bot hear the whole voice note? What about privacy?
The note is turned into text to be understood, and the text is stored with the conversation like any message, under the same retention policy. The audio is used for nothing else. The data processing agreement says so in writing.
What if it does not understand?
It says so and does not guess: "I could not hear the message well — could you type it or resend from a quieter place?" — and if the second is not understood either, it hands to a person with both audio and text. A bot that guesses from unclear audio sells the wrong size.
Is transcription billed?
