WhatsApp Business App vs WhatsApp Business API
A practical comparison: seats, broadcasts, automation, cost, and when you actually need the API — and when you do not.

The short answer
The app is enough until you need three things: more than one person on the same number, real automation, and a link to your store — the moment one of those matters, the app is a ceiling.

Both are called WhatsApp, both reach the same customer, and the message looks identical on their phone. The difference is not the message — it is how many people can reply, and what happens without anyone doing it.
Side by side
| Business app | WhatsApp API | |
|---|---|---|
| People replying | 1 phone + 4 linked | A whole team, each with an account |
| Broadcast | 256, only if they saved you | Unlimited, via approved templates |
| Auto-reply | Greeting and away message only | AI that answers and sells |
| Store integration | None | Automatic order and shipping updates |
| Green tick | Not available | Available, with conditions |
| Cost | Free | Plan + Meta fees per template message (your reply inside the 24-hour window is free for the first 1,000 per number each month) |
When to actually move
Move if one of these is true:
- More than one person needs to reply. The app makes people share one phone, and nobody can tell who answered whom.
- You want to reach customers who have not saved your number. App broadcasts only reach contacts who saved you — usually a small fraction of your list.
- You want order confirmations to run themselves. A store integration sends confirmation and tracking with nobody typing.
- You need numbers. The app will not tell you response time, resolution rate, or who on your team is carrying the load.
What nobody warns you about
There are two routes, and what separates them is what happens to the app on your phone. Coexistence keeps your number working in the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and on the API in the platform at the same time; you are not asked to delete anything, and we ask Meta for a copy of your contacts and chats so they show up in the inbox. Connecting a new number — registering straight on Cloud API — makes the number work from the platform only, which is the right choice for a new number or one you do not use on the app. Pick the route before you start, not after.
Frequently asked
Can I use the same number on both?
Yes, through Meta's coexistence mode: the number keeps working in the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and on the API in the platform at the same time, and your chats and contacts are not deleted. On connect we ask Meta for a copy of your contacts and chats so they appear in the inbox, and anything you reply from the phone reaches the platform and pauses the bot automatically. If instead you pick "connect a new number" — registering straight on Cloud API — that number then works from the platform only.
Does the API come with an app I open?
No, the API has no interface. You need a platform like ArabyBot to give you an inbox, automation and reporting. This is not optional — without one there is nowhere to read the messages.
The app is free — why pay?
If you are one person handling dozens of messages a day, the app is enough and paying makes no sense. It starts to pay off when you need several people on one number, automatic messages tied to your store, or broadcasts to thousands without being blocked.
